Food Supplements

Food supplements come in many different forms, including capsules, powdered drink mixes, and liquids. There are food supplements available for a wide range of needs and they consist of either minerals, vitamins, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and probiotics, to name but a few. Some food supplements are derived from plant based sources while others come from animals. Still others are manufactured in laboratories.

To decide whether adding food supplements to your diet is right for you, consider what you may be missing from your diet or if you have a particular need for a specific food supplement. Many people who do not consume dairy products, for example, take a supplement of Vitamin D, or calcium. For those on plant-based diets, B12, iron, Vitamin D, Omega-3, calcium, and zinc. Depending on your lifestyle, diet, and many other factors, it is always a good idea to which whole foods supplements best suit your needs.

Once you have narrowed down a few food supplement programs that seem to make sense for your needs, it is time to learn the proper dosage for each of the supplements that you plan to take. A good rule of thumb for deciding how much of each to take is to follow the dosage recommendation on the bottle. As with everything else in life, too much of a good thing can be harmful to our systems and you want to be sure that you are not overloading your body with supplements that it cannot handle. Keep an eye on how you feel after taking supplements. If there are any signs that a supplement is taxing your body, stop or reduce your use of it.

Another thing to remember when using food supplements is that much of what you are supplementing for is already in the food that you eat. That said, the whole food vs supplement debate is rather moot seeing as how they go hand in hand. Learn what nutrients your body needs. Then, learn how you are satisfying those needs from your diet. Finally, supplement for whatever may be lacking to maintain an optimal state of physical and mental health.
